Monkeydads? Duh!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is an excerpt from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/in-t-aepjen\">Atlas Obscura<\/a> article about this bar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Called \u201cIn\u2019t Aepjen,\u201d it has provided ales, jenever, food, and lodgings since 1519, and is one of Amsterdam\u2019s oldest bars. \u201cIn\u2019t Aepjen\u201d literally means \u201cIn the Monkeys,\u201d and refers to a time in the golden age of the Dutch Empire, when sailors returning from such distant colonies as Indonesia, and finding themselves short of guilders, would offer up their newly acquired pets as payment, often literally paying their bills in monkeys. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read the article to find out what happened when the bar eventually got overrun by monkeys!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting enough, it is also one of the few remaining wood buildings left from before the great fires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As an aside, we also had \u2018bearenburg\u2019 for the first time.
